History Of Marbles

Marbles have been around for thousand of years as a source of entertainment for children.  They were originally created from clay and over time were made out of glass.  Mass production of the toy was around 1890.  These little round balls come in a variety of colors and sizes.  Growing up I always had them around.  As an adult I have a jar full of them.  Just a little reminder of my childhood.  If you would like and in-depth history on this child’s toy check out Marble on Wikipedia.

My Marbles Are Not Just Child’s Play

I was reading the February 2015 issue of Popular Photography magazine when I came across the article “Child’s Play” on page 34 concerning marbles.  In the article freelance photographer, Catherine MacBride, describes how she obtained her marble photo using direct sun light pouring through her window.  Her photo blew me away.  In the past, I have taken photos of my collection but not with direct sun light.  Catherine MacBride’s article inspired me to photograph mine in direct sun light.  It is amazing how simple it was.
