Girl in Straw Hat
The photo titled “Girl in Straw Hat” was taken by me over 12 years ago for some online challenge I was involved in. In the last video of Module 2 Section 1, Sebastian Michaels of the Photoshop Artistry course suggested using an image that you don’t think has much appeal. I dug through my old photos that I had taken with my Olympus Evolt 500. While I love the photo for personal reasons it did not come out as I had hoped. Figured it was the perfect image to use. This last video covered more on applying Texture layers and Blend Modes. In addition to a helpful technique on preserving the tone of a texture when using a Layer Mask to remove some of the texture. I need more practice on this technique. Another great thing about this video is I was able to practice the Blend Mode shortcuts.
Arsenal
Before I started I grabbed all the images that I needed.
The arsenal included
- Two grunge backgrounds that had some warm tones
- An image with wording
- Followed with an image that was mostly black

Before and After
With the image of my daughter, wearing a straw hat next to a pond, and my arsenal of overlays I processed the photo, according to the techniques in the video. I loved the initial photo, in part because it was of my daughter. But I absolutely love what I have created after following Sebastian Michaels video. As the result of the techniques learned I took a ho-hum image and made it a piece of art that I would have no problem printing up and hanging on my wall.
