Grunge Landscapes
I just completed another video tutorial by the genius behind the Photoshop Artistry online course, Sebastian Michaels. In the video, Grunge Landscapes, he shows additional tips on making the images pop with deep rich colors. While at the same time achieving the rugged, vintage, grunge look that I love so much. I am absolutely passionate about the grunge technique.
At the end of the video Sebastian always encourages his students to try the techniques he just talked about on their own images. For this exercise, Sebastian suggested gathering up
- three landscape photos
- a watercolor wash image
- texture layer
Instead of using the typical blend modes: Soft,Hard and Overlay, Sebastian suggests using the blend mode “Color Burn”. He used Color Burn on the watercolor wash image that he laid over part of the main image, as a result, it gave the landscape a deep rich color.
The landscape photos I chose are of three separate historical cabins that I took while visiting Tennessee in the fall. I did the best I could locating a watercolor wash image among my arsenal of my own images and the ones supplied by Sebastian Michaels. As for the texture layer, I only found one, which I used on the first cabin. For the other two cabins, I used Topaz Detail and Topaz Adjust filters to give the cabins a nice rugged sharpness.
Each image was processed slightly different, with the intention of trying out as many of the techniques Sebastian talked about it in his video. But in the end, I did what looked good to me. The before and after images is the best way to show you what is possible to achieve. Besides, I love sharing my results with my readers.
